You Matter

Finding Significance in Chronic Illness

In a culture that bases a person’s value on performance, beauty, money, and societal contributions, it’s easy to feel like your significance is always in question. When all is going well, your rating is high. But what if you’re struggling to keep up? When you feel held back by illness or devalued by what you’re not able to do, be, or accomplish, what meaning does your life have then?

Well I’ve got news for you today, Friend. You matter. Not because of your peak performance, natural beauty, or money in the bank. You matter because You are made in God’s image. After creating the galaxies, stars, planets, plants and animals, He said it was all good. But upon creating the first human beings, He declared them very good.

Did you know that God placed the Earth at just the right distance from the sun to suit your needs? If our planet orbited any further away, you’d freeze. If it were any closer, you’d burn. He gave you the moon as a nightlight. It controls the ocean’s tides so that your world’s water supply doesn’t stagnate. He gave you a brain with which to think, legs to walk, eyes to see, ears to hear, and a heart to beat. And if any or all of those don’t work well for you right now, you still matter.

He numbers the hairs on your head and says you are more valuable than sparrows—though He is mindful of everything that happens with each of them too. He knit you in your mother’s womb, you’re fearfully and wonderfully made, and there is nowhere you can go that He will not be.

He was bruised for your transgressions and crushed for your iniquities. He purchased you with His own blood and by His stripes you are healed. You are free from condemnation if you are in Christ, and if you love Him, He is working everything in your life—even the hard stuff—for good.

Your name is engraved upon His hands. When you are brokenhearted, He is close. When you draw near to Him, He draws near to you. He keeps your tears in a bottle.

One day, He will return again to take you home. You will know Him fully as you are also known. He will wipe every tear from your eyes. And there will be no more sorrow, sickness, or death. God will make all things new, and you will reign with Him forever.

Whatever you are going through today, even if you feel you have little to offer, your significance doesn’t come from what you can give. When you freely receive the God who made you and saved you, you can rest easy in the value He places on your life. Friend, you matter.
